Your family may not be together at home when an attack occurs. Make certain that everyone knows how to get in touch, and knows what the emergency plan is for different types of attacks.
Make A Plan
Every state, every community, every school and every workplace should have an emergency plan. Find out what that plan is and who is in charge. If your school or employer does not have a plan, volunteer to be part of a group to create one. You may print this plan with and distribute it for future reference.
Designated Meeting Place
- Primary Meeting Place
The best choice is an interior room above ground with few windows and doors.
- Secondary Meeting Place
Choose a meeting place, maybe a friend or relative's house, that's well away from your neighborhood.
Emergency Phone List
It may be wise to have everyone call an out-of-state friend or relative.
Make a list of emergency contact numbers:
-
The primary contact name should be a family leader or a designated person that is multi communication accessible.

- Call 911
If you fail to communicate with anyone in on the Emergency contact list above dial 911.
When reporting an emergency, first clearly identify who you are. This is important because based on who gives them information, people react differently.
If your call is answered by a law enforcement agency and you are reporting a fire or medical emergency, the call-taker will transfer your call---stay on the line while the call is transferred. The call-taker who answers will need information about the incident.
- If the 911 emergency help line is busy contact the primary hospital or clinic in your neighborhood.
Primary Hospital Name
Primary Hospital Number
- The secondary hospital name should be the second closest public hospital or clinic in your neighborhood.
- If the above emergency contact list fails the American Red Cross maintains a database to help you find family. Contact your local American Red Cross chapter for information.
Do not contact the chapter in the disaster area.
